  1. There is a magazine that is just called Archaeology. It's a great one, as it is sponsored by some sort of archaeological program... and of course National Geo. is always good.

  2. Depends on what you need.  NG provides excellent funding for some archaeologists, who in turn write amazing articles about their research.  And they dont publish "c**p" either.  Your best best, if you're looking for something very academic, refer to the American Anthropological Association.  Most articles are online.  These are journals however, not magazines, and most contributors undergo a review process.  1-4 of their peers (other "experts in the field) read the article and decide if it should be accepted with or without (rare) revisions.  Most contributors will re-write an article before its finally accepted for print.  But for the general reader, you usually have to subscribe to the journal, which is typically more expensive than buying a magazine.

  3. "Archeology" is a decent American Archeology magazine.

"Current Archeology" is good for Europe.

"Archeologia" is good for Mesoamerican stuff.

In most cases, the best publications specialize in one area, so saying what is "good" depends on the area of interest.

  4. National Geographic is a great magazine for information in all areas of anthropology, including archaeology.  As others have suggested, the magazine Archaeology Magazine is great ( http://www.archaeology.org/ ).  Check out the website for an idea as to the type of content they provide.  Like National Geographic, Archaeology Magazine provides information from around the world, as well as new excavation techniques and such.

If you are looking for something more local, some countries have archaeological magazines that cover information from that country.  The United States, for example, has American Archaeology, which is published quarterly ( http://www.americanarchaeology.com/aamag... )

All three of these magazines feature very nice, full colour pictures and fairly up-to-date information.

If you are interested in archaeological journals, Antiquity would be a good place to start.  It features journal articles from digs around the globe.  It will be more detailed and more difficult to read than a popular magazine, but just as interesting (definitely worth it, if you are interested).  Its website is:  http://antiquity.ac.uk/

  5. Go direct to an anthropology/archaeology department at a university and find out, and get it first hand from those who actually do the field work...
