  1. Since you’re young and healthy, you  mainly want to protect yourself against major medical expenses, I recommend enrolling in a “qualified” High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). This is health insurance with high deductible amounts, so it costs less than traditional health insurance. Under federal law, the minimum deductible in a HDHP plan is $1,100 for an individual and the maximum is $5,500. The higher the deductible, the lower the premium.

The advantage of an HDHP is that you can shelter up to $2,850 a year from state and federal taxes in a Health Savings Account (HSA). Depending on your tax bracket and where you live, that could save you as much as $2,971 in taxes per year, assuming a combined tax rate of 52.6%—9.3% in state income tax (California), 28% in federal income tax, and 15.3% in self-employment Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) tax. Another way of looking at it is that an HSA doubles your buying power, since you are using pre-tax dollars to pay for deductibles. The contributions you make to an HSA are yours to keep, rolling over each year. The funds are not taxed, provided you use them to pay medical expenses or withdraw them after age 65. The funds earn interest on a tax-deferred basis. Think of it as an IRA that you can use to pay out-of-pocket medical expenses.

To find a qualified plan, you should speak with a health insurance broker. A broker works with several insurers and can find the best plan, rates and coverage. To find a broker, log on to a website like http://www.healthinsurancewiz.com and fill out a form requesting a free quote. Your information will be sent to a broker in your area who will contact you. Good luck!

  2. go to www.everyonebenefits.com/40571017 great affordable plans

  3. There is no such thing as a good AND cheap health insurance.

A healthy 25 year old is probably more interested in catastrophic coverage in case something major occurs. You can get a higher deductible major medical policy without all the bells and whistles for a reasonable premium.

You should visit a local independent agent to find out what is available in your area. The agent can find the best policy for your situation and budget. The plans and premiums are exactly the same whether you use an agent or buy directly from a company. You can also check your college to see if they have any plans available.

  4. If you were in Florida, BlueCross' best plan, Plan 3, would be around $150 per month for you, depending on your Florida county of residence. It has a $1500 deductible, with $25 co-pays for your family doctor and $45 for a specialist. The maximum out-of-pocket any calendar year is also $1500.

To me, that doesn't sound too expensive compared to the average hospital bill of 4 days and $26,000. There are less expensive plans, including hospital-only coverage that would  only be around $50 or $60/month for someone your age.

BlueCross seems to be doing a good job keeping rates down these days. Good luck with your search for reasonable coverage!

  5. No...medical is expensive...with your college they may be able to turn one on to you...

  6. Most universities & colleges offer health insurance for their faculties and students. Since you are in college, you can get a good coverage with an affordable premuim (usally per semester or annual).
