I'm at a two week camp and it's pretty big I have to do about a 5minute solo piece on the second week. I picked out La Follia but I don't know if thats good enough. I learn really fast is there another one thats in a flat key that I could learn in a week of 3 hours practice a day and that is pretty difficult?

  1. Why don't you look at the first movement of the Seitz G minor.  You can find this in the Barbara Barber, book 2:

The book comes with piano accompaniment.  The Seitz G minor is the last piece in the book.  Perlman recorded it and it's not one of the Suzuki Seitz (like La Folia is).

    Good luck!

  2. If you're thinking about La Folia, the Seitz piece isn't going to cut it.  La Folia is nice and hard, but don't count on it being awesome.  Try Polish Dance by Severn.  It's sounds really hard and has a lot of double stops, but it only took me 3 weeks to learn and a month to get ready for competition.  If you're looking for a flat piece, try Handel's 3rd Sonata.  If you're using the La Folia in the Suzuki books, its the next one.  There's also a Rameau Gavotte that's a blast to play (no 4 in the Suzuki Bk. 6).  There's a Gluck/Kriesler piece called Melodie that's a lot of fun if you like to shift, its also really pretty.  If you want a easier one, try Rondino on a theme by Beethoven composed by Kriesler.  its easy and fast.  Melodie and Rondino are in Barbara Barber's 4th book.  For the best piece in the world,  try Rumanian Folk Dance by Bela Bartok in Barbara Barber's 6th book.  I can't remember if its in a flat key, but they are totally awesome.

Have fun! Email me with any questions about the shifting or style if you need me.  Good luck.
