What are some good active fish?

I'm going to get a 5 1/2 gallon tank for my dorm. I want to get like 1-3 fish that will be active and fun to watch.

So far I've looked at a Betta (male or female), serpae tetras (maybe long-fin), tiger barbs, black skirt tetras, or platies.

I want something that will be fairly easy to care for and is pretty hardy. I'll be providing a filter, heater, plastic plants, and all that good stuff.

  1. Male bettas do get along with other fish. You should get a female betta, and 3 albino coradoras catfish. It seems as if the corys never get tired. And they eat all the leftovers of the betta. I have some albino corys with a female betta. Sometimes the betta joins in on their games. They are both very hardy. Female bettas are almost $4 and corys are almost $4 a piece also. Or you can get 4 zebra danios. In my opinon tiger barbs aren't very fun fish. I've owned them, and I wouldn't recommend them. Or you can get 4 female bettas and a rubberlip pleco.

    Goodluck!

  2. Most freshwater fish are inactive especially goldfish. Betta is little active because its a little bit aggressive(All aggressive fishes are active).

I've kept almost all types of fishes and i found that cichlid family are the most active fish that i've ever seen.

When you walk into your room, it will swim toward you instead of swimming away from you like goldfish or betta.

Whichever fish you put into your tank, it will eat it or kill it.

I have a flowerhorn at home and its very active, you can touch it with your hand, but it is very aggressive to other fishes.

  3. gold fish. small one crackers

  4. Any of those fish would be active enough for you.  Most fish, like the tetras, like to be in groups or schools of 6 or more and your tank is too small for that.  Danios are crazy active little fish that are also easy to keep.  I would, however, be a little hesitant to add more then one betta because both males and females tend to like their own tank.  Two females sometimes will get along together, but never put a male and female together for longer then a few hours.  You probably already know not to put two males together.

Betas will nip at long fin fish.

Every fish is different so what might work for some doesn't always work for others.  I have two females and they had to be separated because one is very shy and the other aggressive.

  5. Active fish dont have enough room in that size but tiger barbs will get to big for that size but thats your best choice but they will outgrow it soon.

  6. Get real plants.

  7. i like the tiger barbs. serpae tetras would also be nice if you get 2-3. a betta would be very happy with a 5 gallon tank.

i've had black skirts before. they're very nice and mine lasted through h**l (freak accident).

those are all pretty good choices.

  8. i think 3 tiger barbs would be your best choice.

  9. a five gallon is pretty small and can't keep those fish inside, but i would anyway xD I have a couple swordtails that are really active, guppies are too, tetras, bettas and platies, not so much.
