What are some activities using scissors?

One, is cutting strips of colored paper and making a chain.

How about creating with glue? One idea I have for the glue is making your own color of glue - have quartar size amount of glue and you swirl the marker into the glue.

Any help would be appreciated.

  1. At 2 the best you can hope for it confetti, which is fine!  It teaches them how to operate the scissors and give you the opportunity to teach them how to handle them safely.  They can then take the scraps and make a 'collage'.

At 3 paper chains are a great way to start working on straight lines.

My youngest daughter just turned 4 and she can cut the general outline of most basic shapes (circles, squares, rectangles, etc).  She then has me trim the remainder and glues the projects herself.

A Beka ( a Christian curriculum publisher) makes some great Arts & crafts books for preschoolers.  They run just under $10 each but I think they're well worth it.

  2. Make some sensory bottles.  All ages love this!!  All you are going to need is some clear plastic bottles, glitter, water, kayro syrup, food coloring, and confetti.  You can pretty much put what ever you want to in them as long as the water want hurt it.  Now all you have to do is lay the different materials out and then have the children put some of the materials in the bottle.  After they are done you can fill them almost all the way to the top with water (don't forget you can color it) and supper glue the lid on.  If you use the Kayro Syrup in them it will give it like a lava lamp affect.  Just fill the bottom of the bottles with the syrup, put your water on top of that and your good to go.

  3. Have them lay on butcher paper (the kind that comes in the long rolls) and trace the outline of their body. Then have them color in their body to look like themselves.

  4. Put recycled paper in  your sensory table with paper scissors.  They love to just cut little bits and they get great practice.

For a clue activity, use plastic lids, like ones from tops of margerine tubs, and pour glue it it.  Have the kids add glitter, sequins, beads and various little items.  When the glue dries, remove it from the lid, poke a hole in it and put a ribbon through it for a Christmas ornament.

  5. Have them plant seeds in a plastic cup..this can teach them that they have to take responsibility for it everyday such as water it and such..plus then they can see how  it grows!

  6. anything to do with nature.
