What are some good advertising techniques that don't cost any money?

(1) writing articles and sending to online magazines, blogs, etc.

(2) press releases

(3) joint venturing with similar businesses - you promote them & they promote you

(4) free classified ads (if your service is appropriate)

(5) SEO (if you can do it yourself)

There are tons of methods.  Some more successful than others, mostly depending on what you are advertising.

If it doesn't cost money, its not advertising.  You want PR.  Create news, send a press release to newspapers that are well-written enough to be dropped in as news.

Take a look at your local newspapers.  Notice the small articles in the local section talking about local events.  Many of those were provided to the newspaper by the companies mentioned.  The paper does not have the time or manpower to write all its news so is happy to print something written by somebody else.  There is an art to writing PR to get press, but its not rocket science.
