try china town - there's loads of oriental supermarkets there, and they've generally been open in the evening when i've been in the area

Go down Green Street, Upton Park.

There is about a mile of shops, including several asian supermarkets. They are open in the evenings, they do not open until mid morning.

Otherwise, most small corner shops sale a good range of ethnic foods from Forest Gate through to East Ham and Manor Park.

Buying herbs, spices and most fruit and vegetables is cheaper than the major supermarkets.
