  1. I read this question because i'm in your same position... but i think what  i'm going to do is go around to different banks in your town and inside most of them will have brochures that tell you about there checking accounts. now a days most banks have free ones for the average person.

    things to look for are:

-rate of interest on your money (higher means your money will make you more money)

-atms, see what atms you can use for free.. and also some banks will pay you back like 3 or 4 times every month for the surcharge rates you get paid if you go to a diff atm then your banks.

-online banking. most banks have good online banking now.

i saw at best buy they have this brochure that said you get a check card for atms.. and you will be re-inbursed for the money it costed you at an atm (if you use the wrong atm). and it gives 2.5% interest on you checking account. and it takes some of your money into a savings account which gets you 4.5% intrest. so thats what i'm gonna look into...

--go into a best buy, and go to the finance section of best buy.

  2. If you're looking for a basic checking account for paying bills, etc then I recommend looking into a small local bank. Their fees are often much lower then that of large banks and they care more about their customers.

  3. The one that gives you the higher interest rate for your checking account, so your money can make money (even that not so much) for you.

  4. Hi,

unless you also have a lot of money to put in a savings account of some sort a lot of banks want to charge you for checking - under $10/month.

if you just want a checking account try washington mutual, they used to offer free checking as a way to get a customer in the door, hoping that eventually the customer would open other types of accounts as well.  i'm almost certain they still do that.

do some comparison shopping online to see what banks charge for overdrafts, monthly fees, etc... but, back in the day i used washington mutual and was very happy with the free checking and 'fair' penalty fees.

  5. it depends on where you live. For example, in Ohio we used to have Ohio Savings here in Cleveland but then it became AmTrust. It is a good bank in my experience but I doubt you have one. I know people who have had MAJOR problems with Huntington so you may want to be careful of them.

  6. I LIKE CHASE.
