  1. I'd go for a Squier starter pack with the P-bass it has everything you need that comes with it and it's inexpensive.

  2. This badass right here.

I've said this b4. You MUST try it before you buy it. There are many different kinds of necks and there are many different kinds of hands.

In bass there is a lot of stretching between frets. If you have small hands and you struggle with the neck you will give up because you will think its too hard. The pawn shops are full of guitars because people buy the fancy designs and cool colors and then find it's not very comfortable.

If you are going to play in a band, hanging a instrument around your neck for several hours that isn't comfortable isn't fun. You'll feel like a plow horse.

Hit a music store that offers several brands. Visit several and put them on. See if your hand is comfortable reaching from the back of the neck to the E string. Ask a saleman to show you the correct way to hold it. They'll help. I've met very few a*s in this business that don't want to help. Don't feel stupid asking questions. Everyone started somewhere.

Finally if you find a brand AND a model you like do some online searching. You may be able to get it cheaper somewhere else. Remember though that that guitar store that helped you out in finding a good instrument will also be the same place you go to when you need to do your set-up.

Dude there's always time to buy that tricked out way cool looking guitar. Right now concentrate on finding the right instrument for you.
