Question:

What are some good bottom-dwelling fish for my aquarium?

I usually don't "Stage" my tank with different levels of fish, but want to this time, so there is not a jumble at the mid-level! Currently, I have 2 needlefish (Top water), 3 Angel fish (Mid/top) and a Pleco. I was thinking some sort of crustacian, but I cannot go with Crayfish, as they will eat possible the angel fish, and Fiddlers need some dry land.

I had some catfish in my last tank, so I would prefer to stay away from them.

Oh, and this is currently a 55-gallon which may be upgraded to a slightly larger size in the future to give a bit more room for the needlefish.

Thanks!!!!

  1. well, you could still go with a crayfish if you bought them small enough. They will grow with the angel fish and most likely, not 100% though not nip at the angels fins. also angelfish normally dart away from bottom dwelling critters. a nice addition to tanks are electric blue lobsters (crayfish) they look absolutely amazing and clean the waste of other animals. Also though the fiddler crab does need some land in a tank its not always needed. a fiddler can live in just water for months, although most people wouldnt recommend full time water occupancy it is possible if you remove them every so often and let them climb on some rocks. also you may want to check into mini red crabs?

  2. Well you could get some small zig-zag eels. They will grow to 12 inches but i wouldn't reccommoned. When they get bigger they start biting your angel fishes tail, but since your tank is big then he probably won't see the angle fish.

  3. well i have a 4 or 5 inch crayfish and a angle and they don't fight only  because you should have the angle in first then get a crayfish. if you have a angle or any kind of fish after you get the crayfish then it will get eaten. if you wont to stay away from the the you could get a sucker fish or a snail but if you get a sail make shore the other fish dont eat it. so the best thing i would say is a sucker or a crayfish

    good luck

  4. I don't have any ideas about crustacean's but have you thought about a pseudopod? for example an snail, or a clam. There are also totally aquatic amphibians, like the African Clawed Frog. There are two different species of clawed frog, one is a Pygmy and can be found fairly inexpensively at any pet store. They are docile and make good tank mates for just about anything I had two of them in my tank with a beta. They are not very picky about food, though they love blood worms.

The clam as you know will act as a filter as well and just sit on the bottom of the tank, they really are not much fun. But how many people actually keep clams in a fish tank?

The snail will get very large and while they are not much to look at and they will eat any live plant you have in the tank, they will also assist in keeping the algae population down, and they add diversity to your tank.

I do know that some pet stores like pet-smart or Petco have very small crabs in the tanks, unfortunately I can't help you in that area.

I hope that this helps in some way, good luck with the tank!!

  5. Well, get fish that are not smaller than your present fish because otherwise you know tthat some of them mnay nip others.
