Are there any good deep breathing excercises to do before running a 5k race? How do people prepare for holding their breath for a long time?

  1. Don't hold your breath.  Lay on your back, close your eyes, and visualize your run while taking slow, deep, steady breaths in and out.  Find a rhythm for your breathing as you run.  Again...DON'T HOLD YOUR BREATH!

  2. keep your head up and put your hands on top of your head

  3. Lol OK LISTEN before you run, take a few moments to relax your body alot of people do they hard work before they run also, this may sound bad but the best way to be good is knowing your gonna do GREAT if you go out there and feel like c**p your gonna run like c**p lol.

  4. In through your nose and out through you mouth. Seriously like say this while you running along with doing it. It feels good.

  5. What I did, was breathe in through your nose and through you mouth. Then, your mouth doesn't dry and make you more exausted. If you feel like your going to breathe in your  mouth, put your teeth together. Hope I helped :D!

  6. Don't hold your breath. Breathing is more important when you're running. Obviously you don't want to start the race out of breath, but you don't want to be so relaxed you're falling asleep - hopefully somewhere in the middle so you're adrenaline is pumping and you're breathing slightly faster than normal as you start. You don't want very heavy breathing when you're running the race. If you are hold your hands on your head to slow it.

Honestly, athletes concentrate on their fitness, and warm up before the race. As they're running it, they control their speed - enough to give them energy for a sprint at the end.

  7. For ages coaches have preached " in through the nose and out through the mouth."

    I say just breathe.

Holding your breath will not improve your cardiovascular system.

Just warm up at a pace that's around 60-70% of your maximum heart rate.  Stretch, and relax your breathing.  Concentrate on the race ahead, and don't worry about how you breath beyond taking deep breaths and relaxing.

The most important thing is to warm up, and keep your focus.
