  1. I would suggest Magic: The Gathering.  You can get games with people where the teams are as big as you want.  1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 2v5, w/e!  The game is very large scale.  The lowdown of it is you have 20 life (or more if it's a group game), and you try to rip your opponents face off with creatures and other "spells".  There are 1000's of cards, and they always come out with more.  The game doesn't get ruined by lame cheesy TV shows either.  It's been around since the 1990's.

There are so many strategic possibilities with the game.  There are 5 different colors that each have their own unique creatures and spells to use, different strategies within each other, and you can make decks with multiple colors.

The colors are: Red, Blue, Black, White, and Green.

To make it easier, there is this video on youtube where they teach you how to play.  It's a short series, 6 videos, each like 3-5mins long.  They'll show you gameplay, what the colors focus on, and how anything can happen in the game.  This is just to see if you're intersted

By the way, if you meant card games as in normal card games like Poker, then I would suggest: Texas Hold 'Em, 5 Draw Poker, War, Pig, Spit, and Chinese Spit.  Just some classic games.

  4. OK, you might need an open mind for this one, did you know that tarot cards were invented for playing card games? It is well established that their origin has nothing to do with the occult at all.

They were created in the mid 15th century, commissioned by the Duke of Milan as part of the celebrations for his daughter, Bianca Visconti's marriage into the Sforza family. The extra cards, that were added to a regular playing pack, took as their theme, not an occult philosophy but a traditional Christian Triumph procession. Hence they were called trionfi, meaning triumphs, and from which we get our word trump - it was the invention of tarot that marked the invention of trumps in card games! These games quickly spread and at one time, tarot was the most popular form of card game throughout continental Europe.

These days, most games are played on a French suited pack that you might not recognize as being tarot at all. However, the old Italian suits and trumps are still used in Italy, Sicily, and Switzerland.

Tarot games are what we call point-trick games. Like bridge, whist, or spades, players try to win cards in tricks - but unlike those, different cards carry different point values, so that it is not the number of tricks you win but the number of card points in those tricks that will win or lose you the game. This adds an extra layer of sophistication to play that makes for a much more interesting game.

There are, as general rule, few really good card games for two. However, a couple of them are found in the tarot family. The first and best of them is Straw Man Tarock, and the second and perhaps more interesting, is Millone.

There are many great tarot games for 3 or more, varying greatly in degrees of sophistication and character.

    My favourites for three are:

    Point-Tarock (hard game)

    Terziglio

    Grosstarock (medium to hard game)

Illustrated Tapp (easy to medium game)

    Mitigati (easy)

Droggn (easy but lots of fun)

My favourites for four or more:

Ottocento - possibly the best game in the world.

French tarot - great fun (medium game but a good entry point)

    Sicilian Tarocchi (medium game)

    Hungarian (hard game)

for more than four you can try:

    French tarot

    Troggu

    and Mattazza
