What are some good classroom accomodations for high school students with Tourett's Syndrome?

I am conducting a little research for my employer about teaching students with tourett's syndrome. Are there any suggestions that you have or good websites that you know of that will help us accomodate these students in the classroom?

Oh, and I am very educated on the syndrome and other related condtions. My brother has high functioning autism, and OCD, so I've grown up with someone who has problems that are in many ways similar to tourett's syndrome.

Thanks!

  1. Hi there I have found  a site that you may find useful, it is the OSEP's Tool Kit on Teaching and Assessing Students With Disabilities: Accommodations.

They have information on the following:

    Presentation Accommodations:

    Visual Presentation Accommodations

    Tactile Presentation Accommodations

    Auditory Presentation Accommodations

    Multi-Sensory Presentation Accommodations

    Response Accommodations:

    Description of Response Accommodations

Materials or Devices Used to Solve or Organize Responses

    Setting Accommodations:

    Description of Setting Accommodations

    Timing and Scheduling Accommodations

Examples of Accommodations Based on Student Characteristics

Do's and Don'ts When Selecting Accommodations

    Guidelines for Administering Specific Accommodations

Access Needs that May Require Accommodations

    Accommodations from the Student's Perspective

and a lot more info. Hope this helps.

  2. As a teacher in a regular classroom, I can tell you there are none that are anything more than " candy coating".  I know that sounds negative , but this is a reality.  Most secondary classrooms are overcrowded.  One year, I had three students sitting on the bookcases in the back of the room and another shared my desk with me.  How much attention can a special needs child get in that environment?

In one class of 29,  I had a student with epilepsy, another with severe depression, another who was legally blind , five who spoke only limited English, and another who had just been released from juvenile .  By law, an aide should have been with me, but she was assigned to other teachers as well, so I saw her twice a week.

Like other teachers, I had no training in working with children with disabilities.  Even if I had, I would still have been very limited in what I could possibly do.  So what did I do with those special needs children assigned to me?   I enlisted the help of other children in the classroom, bu t I am certain that is not what their parents wanted them in school for that day or any other day.

  3. give him or her space i'm guessing.

  4. sound proof class rooms will be good.

  5. I think the only thing a Tourettes Syndrom sufferer needs in school is for the whole class to know that he/she has it, what it is, and that he/sh can not help the outbursts.
