I have never been there, but I understand there is a place on the northwest side called Polyester's that is pretty good.  Also, if you like a wide variety of beers and are a bit of a connoisseur, try the place at IH 10 and Huebner (Huebner Oaks) that is right next to half-price books.  (Sorry, the name escapes me at the moment.)  Will edit this if I remember it.

Try sunset station downtown, there are a lot of clubs that you can go in and out of until you find something that seems like your style. Take I-35 downtown, exit commerce. The best places to go are downtown...really depends on what you like.
