  1. Habitat for Humanity will usually have a weekend build day somewhere in your area. There are a lot of activities on a house site that require no prior experience and most HFH groups are always looking for more hands.  They can also accomodate groups of people (such as you and your friends or family).

  2. Group volunteering activities can be hard to find, especially on short notice. You can go to the usual places to find volunteering opportunities, but you may need to actually call organizations and ask specifically about group activities:

    VolunteerMatch, http://www.volunteermatch.org

    Idealist, http://www.idealist.org

    Change.org, http://www.change.org

    CraigsList, http://www.craigslist.com

    Network for Good, http://www.networkforgood.org

    http://www.1-800-volunteer.org/

    ServeNet, http://servenet.org/

Also, contact your local volunteer center; you can find this via the Points of Light Foundation web site,

    http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/

There's also this government sponsored site, http://volunteer.gov/gov/ which provides volunteer positions through USA federal land agencies like Fish & Wildlife, Forest Service, National Parks, etc.

Group volunteering activities include cleaning up a playground, fixing up a trail, participating in a fundraising walk for charity, doing jobs together to raise money for a cause (yard work, dog walking, car washes, bake sale, etc.),  beach cleanups, graffiti cleanups, staffing a meal shift at a homeless shelter, ushering a play or performance at a nonprofit theater or arts center (and you get in free for the show afterwards), and, as someone has already mentioned, working together for a Habitat for Humanity project.

You could all also train together through the American Red Cross for disaster response.

  3. paint over graffiti

  4. Contact local shelters or children's homes and see if they need help doing yardwork or painting, etc.  A lot of those places are getting ready for spring cleaning and other sprucing up, so your help will be very welcomed!  You can also contact local community centers and tell them you all want to do a service project.  I'm sure your guidence counselor at school would be happy to help you guys come up with something (once she picked herself off the floor and got over her shock at you're desire to do something for someone else).  You can also try contacting the city and asking them if there are any service projects that are needed.
