  1. Clean up projects in poorer neighborhoods or working at a shelter, say homeless or for battered women, perhaps an orphanage.

  2. Well, as an elementary school teacher, I can tell you there schools always need help...depends on your age, of course...in terms of helping the elderly...go to a nursing home and just visit with them for awhile...you'd be amazed how many elderly people never get visitors...

Other things would include collecting things (not just money) for homeless shelter, battered women shelters (one year my 5th graders made Easter baskets for kids at a battered women's shelter...the kids tend to get forgotten)...

If you like animals, you can volunteer at no-kill shelters...they're usually run on donations and always need people to help clean cages, etc.  Or you can collect blankets, food, cat litter, etc.)

Check local churches...or call non-profit organizations like St. Vincent DePaul, American Council for the Blind, your local Boys and Girl's Club, etc.  Hang out at/visit at a children's hospital (which will amazingly put any problems you have in perspective pretty darn quick!), go to a local food pantry and offer to help package, cook, or distribute food...

Even something like doing a simple penny drive (my 4th grade one year made over $3000 in pennies in only 6 weeks (and we're an urban public school) for St. Jude's Children's Hospital)...have a 'hair' drive and get people to cut and donate their hair for Locks of Love (for wigs for cancer victims)...

Believe me...there's a million possibilities.  Think about your talents and who you'd like to help...no matter how big or small, you'll be making a difference and that's what counts!
