  1. Tree Gard is a good one for use on smaller trees and shrubs.

Ropel is one that is much better for perennials and flowers and shrubs.

As long as you change them often, you can get away with using scent repellents, these can be anything that has a scent that the deer are not used to. Hair, both human and animal (put in a small bag made up from  a old pair of stockings), soaps, (those little ones from the hotels are great! bore a hole through them and hang them with a piece of thread or fishing line) mothballs, rags soaked in perfume (this does not last too long) etc.. I would change them once a week to keep the deer skittish.  One thing that a lot of people recommend because there are many gimmick type repellents, is different types of urine. Take it from a hunter, this will not work. Deer are not afraid of urine scents what so ever. As a matter of fact hunters use it as a cover scent to hide their own odor. Animals pee in the woods all the time, and all this will do is make the deer think that an animal has been by there before he or she got there.

  2. Isn't this a contradiction in terms: deer repellant but deer friendly?!

If you look at those expensive repellents sold in stores you'll learn that most of the ingredients are organic and easily gotten from the home:  cayenne pepper, dog urine.  But the best device against deer is a tall-enough fence around your property.  Deer can easily jump ten feet high.

  3. Do you live near a large metro zoo? We were told that scat (p**p) from large cats, tigers, etc, scares off deer. Apparently the scent of a large predator freaks them out.

So far, it has worked for our garden and the zoo gives it away. They won't deliver though- hee hee.

    Good luck.

  4. Here is a list of plants for future plantings, that are resistant to deer.
