Simple stuff:

We are out dining - and I reach for one of the last two rolls.  I know you like rolls and you probably want one, so I select the smallest or the most deformed one - leaving you the better one.  Same goes for pieces of chicken out of a pot - leaving someone the choicest pieces.

I COULD compete against you for the attention of someone, but out of whatever emotion, I decide to let you go on ahead and get their attention.

Or even more significant - a &quot;macho&quot; guy (or a mother!!) volunteering to be killed/hurt/damaged to save some others the same fate.

Patriotic soldiers do this frequently - they accept poor pay and horrid conditions so that others can relax in the peace that the soldiers enforce.  They even give their lives.
