  1. Core work. Sit-ups, crunches, pilates, yoga, etc. Anything that strengthens your abs and back. Those will help you the most. It won't hurt to do arm and leg stuff too. I don't know many leg exercises, but for your arms you can do push-ups and pull-ups. You can also look up some exercises for using medicine balls. Those help a lot.

  2. By "core work," we mean the abdomen and back.

Lots of resistance training -- repetitive exercises using external force to push against muscles to make them stronger and increase their endurance.

This includes weight machines, free weights and the type of simple floor exercises Dara Torres does several times weekly: Lying on her back, she lifts and stretches each leg while also pushing against it with her arm.

However, do not ignore hypoxic training (exercising with low oxygen). In swimming, our muscles are trained to become efficient with lower amounts of oxygen (especially true for sprinters). Land exercises are usually performed under circumstances of abundant oxygen. (Ever notice all that huffing and puffing in the weight room?).  Remembering to include hypoxic workouts will help your muscles perform better when you get back into the pool.
