  1. If you don't want to buy a camera, then you shouldn't be in this photography class.

Photography is a lot of fun, you should at least take it seriously. If you do, you wont want to give a rental camera back at all.

Your teacher is going to want you to have a 35mm SLR.

    I would suggest a Nikon FM10.  with a 50mm lens

it is full manual, easy to use and not very expensive.

This is how I started off and Now I am an amazing photographer, just take a look at my work and see!

  2. I agree with Edwin.  I have a Rebel 2000 and it is a great camera.  It should have all the same settings as your digital, so it should be easier to use.

  3. Buy a Canon EOS Rebel film camera. Then you can use the lenses from your DSLR. You can sell the film camera later or you might just decide to keep it as a back-up.

  4. Depends on what lens you have with the XTi. If its just the kit lens EF-s 18-55 then you wont be able to use it on a film camera. EF-s lenses wont work on full frame cameras like film ones. If you have some other EF lenses then those all work on all EOS cameras.

If you keep your eye out on Craigslist you can sometimes find a screaming deal. I bought my daughters AE-1 (which is not EOS by the way and cant use my EF lenses) with a 200mm lens for $20. I got lucky. You may also get lucky.

If you dont have any EF leses to speak of, then it really wont matter on which camera you get, as long as it suits your needs. A Pentax K1000 would work just as well as a Ricoh or a Yashica or a Nikon or a Canon or a..... Just try to make sure that you dont have any light leaks.

    EDIT:

Most camera stores I've seen wont rent a camera long term, or if they did you'd pay for that camera a couple times over. There is one camera shop that sells a student camera with a lens for $99 when they have them. I beleive that they buy the cameras back at the end of the year, clean them up and then sell them again. You may look for a decent camera shop in your area that does this.

If you want new, I've seen my local Taget has the Canon Rebel K2 (or was it a T2) for less than $200 I believe (dont quote me on the price). But I cant find it on their website. You'd have to look yourself.

  5. y'know, you may go shooting some film and find that you love film, it's a bit pricey but a wonderful medium our friend in new zealand loves it. and there really is nothing quite like it for true. if i had more money i'd shoot with it way more than i do.

i am guessing a photography supply may rent them, but they will want a pretty substantial deposit i'm sure.

  6. The Canon Rebel K2 is a great film camera and real cheap right now- just saw one for less than  $100.

  7. ok i'm gonna tell you some secrets:

    1. all film cameras are good :) - and they last longer than 5 years.....

    2. a film camera is just a light tight box with a shutter, a mount to put lenses on and a method to move film from one side to the other, choose a film you like and go shoot it

    3. one scan and film is digital

    4. film technology and DR is improving all the time

    5. if you want large files (like 125mp) without noise and know how to drive a film cam (6x7 or so size) then you can have it

ok so what the others said, personally i would goto ebay and buy the cheapest EOS anything with or without a lens and use that with your digi kit, 50 or 100 bucks might do it, not in your market so dont know

do they mention anything about lenses?

isnt there someone in the yahoo family close to you (posting from NZ?) that could lend you a body or body and lens??????

    a

  8. Hands down my favorite camera, has been a Canon AE-1. Ya it not fancy and doesn't have alot of bells and whistles, but it's build like a tank, its easy to use and its cheap. You can usually get a body and 50mm lens for well under $200.
