  2. Elizabeth and Elizabeth: the Golden Age

also I like Shakespeare in Love(it has a little of Queen Elizabeth a.k.a Judi Dench- love her!!1)

  3. The Other Bolyne Girl (Henry VIII is hot!)

  4. Mrs. Brown  (Queen Victoria)

    The Queen (Elizabeth II)

    The Virgin Queen (Elizabeth I)

The Private Life of Henry VIII

A Man For All Seasons (Thomas More & Henry VIII)

  5. Henry II (b.1133 – d. 1189: ascended 1154) was portrayed by Peter O'Toole in two movies in the early '60s.

    (1) 1964 Becket (with Richard Burton)

    (2) 1968 Lion in Winter (with Katherine Hepburn)

    -----------------------------

In "Becket", Henry II is in his mid 30s , and the story centers around Thomas Becket, the archbishop of Canterbury who was assassinated in the year 1170.

    -----------------------------

In the "Lion in Winter" is set in Christmas 1183. Henry II would have been age 50, and his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine would be age 61. Henry II and Eleanor had 5 sons, two of which died before the movie begins. The 3 sons of Henry II who are alive during the movie are:

Richard the Lionhearted (age 26) -Later to become King

Geoffrey, Duke of Brittany (age 25) [would die within 3 years]

Prince John (age 21) - Later to become King John [of the Robin Hood stories]

    ----------------------------------

The background of the movie is that Henry has imprisoned his wife for ten years (a comfortable prison, but a nevertheless a prison). The reason for her imprisonment was ten years ago she encouraged her teenage sons to overthrow their father (the attempt failed).

There was another major attempt to overthrow the father only a few months before the setting of the movie. The plot centered on the oldest son of Henry II, (Henry the Young King) who was a year older than Richard the Lionhearted. The young Henry died of dysentery in the middle of the uprising.

    ----------------------------------

The final two characters in the movie are Philip II Augustus (age 18). Philip has been co-king of France since the age of 14, married at age 14.5, and senior king since the age of 15. He is rumoured to have had a homosexual affair with Richard the Lionheart (suggested in the movie but not stressed). He was friends with all the brothers and was a frequent ally in trying to overthrow the father.

The last character is Alais (the very young mistress of the King). She is probably the same age as the youngest son, John.

    ----------------------------------

Katherine Hepburn was age 61 when the film was made, so she is the exact age of her character. Anthony Hopkins plays the young Richard the Lionhearted in his first major film (age 31). Peter O'Toole was only 5.5 years older than the Anthony Hopkins who is playing his son.

  6. the tudors yeah i know it isnt the most accurate but hey its entertaining

  7. Try The Madness of King George - it's about George III, who was the monarch when the Brits lost the North American colonies.

And A Lion in Winter, a retelling of Shakespeare's Richard III.

And The Other Boleyn Girl, which deals with Henry VIII and his first 3 (of 6) wives.

And there's lots and lots on Queen Elizabeth I.

  8. Anna of the thousand days.
