I would like to stock a cabin that I will probably not be back to for 5 years or more. So what do you recommend? I'm also wouldn't mind to have some other suggestions on how to keep a cabin suppled.

10 points for best answer.

  1. canned food.

  2. food in cans

  3. you can go to a camping store and buy freeze dried food.  or army navy.   or i suppose canned food.

  4. I doubt anything will survive for five years except wine and cheese. It seems like a rat or some type of animal would smell the food and eat it in five years.

  5. are there bears were the cabin is. if so don't leave any food . Even if you leave food in a can they can smell it... you think I am nuts. I can see it in your eyes.  but there are many stories about it and even one were they ate every can except for cans of sourcraut.  that confirms what I think of sourcraut

Yes they will get in the cabin give them a few months and they will get it if they have to chew a hole in the wall. I have seen a 300 lbs black bear (smallish) pry open a car just peeled the door 2/3 off its hinges

  6. I am Jack's sense of mortification.

  7. MRE's  Meals Ready to Eat shelf life of  5 - 10 years.  some of them look very tasty

  8. MRE's are good for at least 5 years. Low acidic canned foods last 2-5 years as stated in this article. http://preparedness.families.com/blog/ho...

Most food will go stale or spoiled within a year. The above site should help you a lot.
