I am going to be teaching them how to wash their hands. What is a fun way to get this topic started?

  1. Start with a brief discussion about germs and how they spread. Put glitter on your hands and shake hands with one of the kids. Then have everyone continue shaking hands, spreading the glitter "germs" to everyone in the room. Talk about how real germs can't be seen like the glitter, then about how to get rid of germs and stay healthy.

Make sure you teach them that warm water is important (my students often just turn on the cold water), and the same for soap. Also, have them sing a song while they wash to make sure they scrub for a long enough time. ABCs and Twinkle Twinkle are two that are long enough (20 seconds is what Universal Precautions says).

Make it fun and don't be afraid to get silly! If you make washing hands fun, it'll help them stay healthy.

  2. Let them get their hands real dirty with something obvious, and them ask them what do you think we should do with our dirty hands? They will say to clean them....hopefully... and then go to the sink and run the water, use fun soaps, and sing a song like row your boat while washing...
