Its safe to go with things you know the bride & groom will use in their new home.  Coffee maker, toaster, microwave, blender, cookware, bakeware, bed sheets.  Shopping might even be easier if they have a bridal registry.

ok.. here is what i did for a bridal shower i threw, but you can use it as just a shower gift.. The other bridesmaid and i each took a theme and created a basket for each theme.. (we just thought it would be better than all chipping in on a big ticket item like china or a food processor)..themes cam be like kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, the husband (a tool box filled with manly items..everyone always forgets the husband!) ect. I took the honeymoon theme.. get items that fit where they are going.. My friend was going on a cruise.. in the basket (which was actually a beach bag to use on the cruise) i put a beach towel for each,  sunscreen, flipflops, a mag subscribtion (for beach reading!) 2 nice passport covers, some swimmies and one of those blow up things that go around your waist(just to be funny.. I put a card on it that said 'just in case you want to go swimming after boozing it up) a pretty lingerie item (it is a honeymoon!) and then in a smaller water proof bag (that she coulduse to put items like her camera, money, phone, whatever you don't want sand or water in) I put a bunch of s**y things.. condoms, massage oils, flavored lotions, ky.. you get the point... then i attached a card to the small bag that said "x*x... open at your own risk.. this is a HONEYMOON bag after all!".. so that she and everyone else got the idea of what was in there without being in your face about it.. Also, and only because she is my childhood friend i put a GC in it for a couples massage on the cruise. (i had to call the cruise line to make these arrangements....

people thought that it was a good idea and a little different then the basic toaster, blender thing...

For another shower gift i did something similar.. a bar basrket.. I got one of those cute silver tubs that you put ice adn beer in and i filled it with different glass sets (martini, margarita, wine) then i bought utencils for drinks.. coasters, glass identifiers, stirrers, a martini shaker, a margartia salt dish, wine bottle stoppers, a couple different rim sugars in different flavors.. then i put a couple bottles of alcohol in it to match the glasses.. you get the point! Again, she really liked it and it was something she wasn't expecting since it was not registered for...

Just pick something that matches the personality of the bride and groom... obviously you wouldn't get the bar basket for non-drinkers, ya know..
