Question:

What are some good gift suggestions for a woman turning 50?

I'm not sure this is the right category, but seemed the most appropriate from the list....

I have a longtime family friend who will be turning 50 next month. I'm not looking for a gag gift, but for something appropriate, memorable and with meaning (if that's possible). She's the "new face" of 50 -- a stunningly beautiful woman who looks easily 15 years younger than her actual age. Not a mom and not a grandmother -- a vibrant "young" woman who's about to have this horrible number attached to her.

Any ideas? I'm at a total loss.

Thanks.

  1. You're friends with Madonna?

Update: Actually, it's funny that you say she's "about to have this horrible number attached to her." If that's her attitude, there's nothing you can give her that will make her feel better. People who run from the fact that they're getting older will never be happy. There are only moments when they can distract themselves from the truth of it with material things or trying to seduce some younger person. If she's 50 and looks good, and feels young - that's wonderful. There's nothing wrong with growing older; it's inevitable (unless she wants to off herself).

But if she's always moaning about it, you can give her a check: A reality check.

  2. Hi Shady,

Does your friend like to garden?  If so, buy her an assortment of 50 beautiful flower bulbs that she can plant in a month or two, think of a planting area with gorgeous iris or purple-cone flowers or whatever you think she might like.  Planting bulbs are easy and most come back every year.  Every spring she will think of the lovely person who got them for her.  One of my favorite gifts to my friend was to pay for a day at a spa for her.  She absolutely loved it and, although she was beautiful without the spa, it was a day she said that she really needed and I'm really glad I did it for her.  I've done both of these things and they were both appreciated.  Good luck!

  3. find out her favorite flower, and buy her a plant for her garden, or a tree, something that will be there for years to come, or a nice piece of jewellery with her name on it, good luck and hope you come up with the most perfect gift and wish her happy 50th birthday, i know what its like, i am 53

  4. If you know any of the things that she likes, you can put together a basket of her favorites.  Like her favorite perfume, shower gels, candy, snacks, books, etc.  You can even put in some candles and a gas gift card.

    Otherwise, some other ideas:

If she commutes to and from work, you can get her a gas card.   Then, if she brings coffee or tea with her, they have mugs that you plug into the cigarette lighter and it keeps the drink warm as you're driving.  I think Brookstone and Hammacher Schlammer has them.

Subscription to her favorite magazines or newspaper.  Or one you think she'll like.

If she has any hobbies, you can get her something related to that hobby, or a gift card to the store she shops in for that hobby.

If she collects anything, you can get her something to add to that collection.

Cds of her favorite singer or band, or a Cd set

Dvds of her favorite tv show or movie, or Dvd set

    Take her out to dinner!

    Dinner Cruise

Fountain for her home, yard, or office

    Bench for her yard

    Statue for her yard

    Something for her home.

A nice pair of earrings or bracelet

Perfume and some lotions, Philosophy has awesome scents!  Even Shower gels!

Being she's a long time friend, you can get her one of those collage frames, the ones that are large and have the many different sized openings to put pictures in.  You can buy them in any frame dept. of just about any store.  Kohl's, Target, Walmart, Linen's and Thing's, Michael's, etc.  You can buy one of them and put pictures of her and her family and friends through the years, but leave 2 spaces blank.  One to write Happy Birthday and the date, and one to take a picture of her with you, or her and You and her family, etc on the day of her Birthday or Birthday celebration.  It's like a scrapbook for her wall, she can hang it up and look at it whenever she wants!

    Tickets to a Dinner Theater

Tickets to a show, concert, or sporting event

Take her out!  I'm sure a day out with a friend would mean a lot more to her!  You can go see a show or movie together, go get manicures and then out to lunch or out to dinner together.  That would probably mean SO much more to her than anything you buy her.  Spending time with those she loves is going to mean SO much more to her!

    Jewelry Box

Being she's a family friend, you probably are all friends and related to a lot of the same people.  If you have the time, you can ask those around her that she's close with to e-mail you something about her, and make a foamboard or a frame with 50 We Love and Adore About ______ and then  print out what everyone has had to say and incorporate them into it.  You can either put them into the frame the way they were sent, you can ask everyone to hand write them and mail it to you, or you can have it done up and do it on the computer.  Then you can either frame it, or make it like a scrapbook page.  In Michael's and AC Moore, in their framing section they have what's called Scrapbook frames, they are 12x12 in size and you can go to the front of the store and by the paper that fits into the frame and do the layout and frame it with this frame.  You can gather what everyone said and make a layout with a picture of her, and frame it in the frame.  Or you can make it about you and your reasons only and do the layout and give it to her.  I'm not sure if you want to make her something like this, but I'm sure it would mean a lot to her!

    Other ideas:

Gift card to her favorite store

If she likes to cook, you can get her some cookware, or cookbooks, or some new cooking gadgets.

If she likes wine, you can get her a wine tasting at a vineyard and then dinner at the restaurant that's at the vineyard.  Or you can get her a bottle of her favorite wine and a wine refigerator or some new goblets.

You can give her a bottle of champagne and some flutes.

How about an iPod?  Would she learn how to use it?  If so you can get her one with a gift card to iTunes.

What does she like to do in her spare time? That should help you figure out what you can get her?  Where does she like to go?  Etc.

I hope some of these ideas help and that your friend has a very Happy Birthday!
