If you haven't already, read Maus 2. Also try Cancer Vixen, which is about a woman in New York City living with and fighting breast cancer; Persepolis and Persepolis 2, which is about a girl living in Iran after the revolution; and American Born Chinese, which is about a Chinese-American boy dealing with racism and stuff.

Bleach, Naruto, and One Piece are heavy hitters in the US and Japan, but those are for people that like the action/adventure type. Yotsuba& is a really cute and funny one; it's one of my personal favorites.
