As far as I know, I'm teaching a special ed 2nd grade this year with an aide. It's a small class with only 12 students. What are some good first day of school ice breakers for this level?

  1. When I was in second grade, we played the paper ball game.  Here's how to play:

    1) Everybody gets a paper and pencil

    2) Everybody writes something about themselves (Ex- I have two dogs and one cat.) Be sure they don't write their name at the top!

    3) Have everyone crumple their message, then throw it in the air.

    4) Have everyone grab a message, making sure it isn't their own.

    5) one by one, let the kids read the message out loud, then guess who wrote it.

    P.S. Hope I helped!!!

  2. This is a fun idea especially with special needs students. It is called star search. Get a set of cut out stars (or make them yourself) and make sure you have enough for each child. Put each child's name on a star. Then place the stars around the room on various objects that the children may need to familarize themselves with(garbage can, pencil sharpener, computer, teachers mailbox, classroom rules, etc). Make sure you write down where each of the stars went! (also do this as a 1st day activity so have it set up that morning) Have the children then go around the room at your designated time to see if they can find their name. After they find their name they can come back to the carpet and if they are able have each of the children tell you where they found their stars. That gives you an introduction to begin and talk about the important areas of your classroom. It breaks up you talking the whole time and has the children up and moving. Let me know if you have any questions!
