You can cut and crop a picture of yourself so it will just show your face... unless, of course, the outfit is important but most profile pictures are meant to be closeups of the face.  Some people use small digital cameras for their profile pictures but I usually use disposable cameras from Walgreen's or Rite-Aid and take pictures and then get a photo CD which scans the negatives so the pictures look bigger.  Then, if I'm doing just a close-up of my face, I make a temporary save of the picture and then crop it and then upload it.
