  1. Don't worry about posting your question in the wrong section. If a family fighting cancer, concern for others in need, young people taking positive actions in their community, and the meaning of friendship are not about love (Valentine's Day) and societal concerns, what are? I want to thank you (and your classmates) for attempting to do something positive in an awfully negative situation.

The personal things you want to do for your friend such as providing transportation, fixing food, babysitting, etc. are all excellent ideas. However, make sure she wants the type of help you are offering and her parents are in agreement. Sometimes the main goal of a person or family is to live as normally as possible as they work through a difficult time. Talk to her or a close personal friend to assess their needs.

If you get the go ahead to schedule an event get your parents, your friends parents, school teachers, local businesses, and others in your community involved. An event involving a cross country track meet would be great, "Run for Truman (last name)" event. It would be a way for your whole team to participate and show their friendship for their classmate.

You could also organize a day for "everyone" involved: friends, teachers, family, (I mean everyone) to show up and bring a single flower and a personal card, note, or gift to the hospital to give it personally to Truman. People should gather outside, music should be involved, and they should go in, in a steady stream and hug the child and give him the flower or card or gift. If Truman is to ill the same concept can be used for his siblings or just for your friend.  Make sure your friends parents are OK with this. However it could be a surprise for Truman, your friend, and her other siblings.

Another thing is to organize a blood (or blood platelet) drive. If you go to a blood bank you usually can donate for a specific person or family.   This could help them financially while lifting up their spirits. This is not only a loving gesture but much needed as Truman will probably need both blood and blood platelets if he is operated on.

I hope everything works out for your friend and her family.
