I am no expert but there are a few considerations.

Are you trying to insulate against heat or noise?

For noise generally the higher the density the better the noise reduction.

I am kind of assuming that you are talking about thermal insulation.

What is temperature range?

Are you talking high temps like in the combustible range?

Do you need the insulation to be flexible?

Will the insulation be prone to getting wet?

Considerations, fiber glass has advantages it can be easy to work with, It generally resists moisture.

It can be used for somewhat elevated temperatures.

Rigid or semi-rigid foams can be good and can provide protection from air infiltration. which could otherwise near totally negate the insullating value of fiberglass, wind will blow right through fiberglass  

Down is great unless it gets wet.

Synthetics fibers ie. polyester are great and are nearly uneffected by moisture.
