I'm looking for some good sad instrumental jazz songs or anything good to play on a dark, rainy day. If I could have the name of the song as well as the person who plays it that would be great! Thank You!

  1. "A Love Supreme" - John Coltrane

    "Mercy, Mercy" - Cannonball Adderley

"Killer Joe" - The Jazztet (Benny Golson)

"Down Here On The Ground" - Wes Montgomery

"A Day In The Life" - Wes

"Ye Me Le" - Sergio Mendes & Brazil '66

  2. "Time to Say Goodbye" by Chris Botti

  3. Reading the answers that you have so far, I can say that there are a lot of great songs, BUT most of them are nowhere near the mellow mood you are looking for.

I used to teach young kids. For nap time, I would play mellow jazz mixes that I would create from my own collection. I got up to 43 one hour cds before I left teaching.

I promise that the following songs are mellow and perfect for a rainy day.

Booker Little- If I Should Loose You

    Lester Young-These Foolish Things

Yusef Lateef- I Don't Stand a Ghost of a Chance With You

    Hank Mobley- I Should Care

    John Coltrane- Naima

    Bennie Green- Laura

Herbie Mann and Phil Woods- Blood count

    Elvin Jones- Shadowland

    Tina Brooks- For Heavens Sake

    Kenny Dorham- Soon

    Sarah Vaughan- April In Paris

Warne Marsh- Autumn in New York

    (Philly) Jo Jones- Gwen

Wes Montgomery- I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face

    Andrew Hill- Alfred

Betty Carter- I'm Yours, Your Mine

Coleman Hawkins- I Can't Get Started

    Oscar Peterson- After All

    Berney Kessel- Mermaid

    Percy Heath- Hanna's Mood

Ella Fitzgerald- Something to Live For

    Wayne Shorter- Teru

    Stan Getz- You're Blaze

    Johnny Hodges- Three and Six

    Ben Webster- Chelsea Bridge

Frank Morgan- A Flower is a Lovesome Thing

I'm sure you will find these mellow, they were good enough for 4 year old kids to wind down and fall asleep to. Every single song I have listed IS mellow.

If you really want more than what I have listed, you can e mail me.

  4. Angel Eyes, not sure who the composer is.

    Here's that Rainy Day,

    Midnight Voyage, Michael Brecker.

    Brown Midnight, Thelonius Monk.

    etc.

By the way people, he said sad, not straight ahead pieces.

  5. Here are the best jazz musicians out today and some Cd's you should check out

Dave Holland Quintet - Features the best trombonist out today Robin Eubanks and one of the best Sax players - Chris Potter

    and

    Critical Mass

are outstanding.... the live album is also amazing, but it gets very out at times....

Joshua Redman - Amazing Sax player who hasn't forgotten his roots while he's progressed... very funky at times as well

    Try: Elastic

    and Momentum

    - Brian Blade plays on these albums and he is best drummer out today in my opinion.

Roy Hargrove and the RH Factor - Roy is one of the top trumpet players around and his band experimenting with new sounds and musical fusions while at the same time making it accessible!

    Try Hard groove

The Flight of the Cosmic Hippo

I personally think Winton Marsalis is a great teacher, defender and promoter of jazz AND a good trumpet player... but I feel that he never really "says anything" when he plays...he never plays an idea that has much meaning...

    I'd also check out

    Gerry Bergonzi

    John Swana

    Terence Blanchard

    Chris Potter

    Robin Eubanks

Wyclef Jordan (bone player for Marsalis)

  6. Dexter Gordon: As Time Goes By

  7. Anything mellow by Esbjörn Svensson. Surely the ballads "Hands Off" - "The Second Page" - "From Gagarin's Point Of View" etc. But also his "medium" tracks like "Seven Days Of Falling" - "Tide Of Trepidation" - "800 Hundred Streets By Feet" did make a rainy day.

  8. Maiden Voyage - Herbie Hancock

    Moanin' - Art Blakey

    Stolen Moments - Oliver Nelson

    Janine - Donald Byrd

    Sidewinder - Lee Morgan

Song For My Father - Horace Silver

    Sister Cheryl - Tony Williams

    Red Clay - Freddie Hubbard

    So What - Miles Davis

April in Paris - Count Basie
