I have no job experience and will turn 18 in one month. I'm going to California State University of Northridge and am looking for a job that is stable and that pays well (not like taco bell or mcdonalds). Any advice would be great. Thanks!

  1. The best thing you can do is try to work out a job that you can do both at college and at home, and that has flexible scheduling. For instance, my friend worked at Menards once a week during the school year. Then during breaks she'd work at home at a store by there. The good thing is since she was working at Menards, her pay kept increasing throughout her years. Eventually she also moved from cashier to customer service. And now that she's graduated she has a full time job at a high pay rate while she looks for something in her field. Other options that might offer the same benefits would be places like Walmart, Meijer, or chain stores that you can find at a local mall.

Another option is local nanny services or babysitting for special needs children. I knew several people in college who worked for this nanny service. The service scheduled all the sitters and did background checks etc. and the sitters were paid really high. The same goes for working with children with special needs. After all, a parent can't just trust 12 year old to come babysit a child who has special needs. You might have to come a session early and learn special routines for that child. However you'll probably get paid higher. You can check with a local independent living center and see if they can direct you to a place that provides those services. Once again, the job is very flexible so you can work it with your school schedule.

Those were really the only two examples of types high paying jobs that I heard of and people were consistently happy with the pay and hours. So I really hope that helps you put things into perspective some.

  2. Generally, a retail job is ideal for college students. Retail stores usually have flexible shifts that work around college schedules and also include nights and weekends, so you'll always have time to work a shift even if your course schedule is all over the place.

  3. serving at a restaurant. this usually works best with a college schedule. also, most restaurants are pretty flexible with your schedule if you need days off. you can work as much or as little as you want/need. and you get tips...which you'll get every day (which really helps in college).

    good luck!!! :)
