In April, my family and I will be spending two days in Venice, Italy (a Thursday and Friday) before boarding a cruiseship to tour the Eastern Meditteranean on Saturday. I love museums of any sort, as well as just touring to any place of interest. Any certain places, sights, or areas I should go to while there?

  1. I agree with Billy one of the best things about Venice is to stop being a tourist for a little while and just walk around as if you lived there.  Stroll into a little shop, look at the houses along the canals, take a leisurely boat or gondola ride, sampling fruit at the local outdoor market,  and relax on a sidewalk cafe while enjoying a great meal.  That's what Venice is truly about!

  2. Its actually quite a small place.  I don;t think I went to any museums when I was there but I know there was some.

I went into St Marcos bascialla/duomo which was interesting, but I found the Doge's Palace next door to be pretty good actually and worth a look.

There are lots of churches and what not to explore and see and I just came upon them while meandering around. There is the odd park too which is a surprise......I had a laminated fold up map that had the top 10 things to see in Venice which I think I did...the only thing on the map I remember was seeing a building with a spiral type staircase going up the side of the building which was quite cool.

So mainly St Marcos square is the main place...there are some markets nearby , Rialto Bridge and the markets next to them are pretty goof fro trinkets ( the bridge itself has more "proper" shops and more expesnive and probably authenitic good.)

  3. Don't miss the Frari's Basilica. Also, risotto & a house salad (to share) at Anima Bella, San Marco, calle dei Armeni (or sometimes listed as Calle Fiubera) No. 956, San Marco, is a "must do." It'll cost you a bit, but it will be worth it. (And everything in Venezia is pricey!) Also, Rick Steves recommends (and I concur!) that one of the best things to do in Venezia is simply get lost! Don't worry, eventually you'll see an arrow towards San Marco or the train station (Ferrovia) and will get unlost!

p.s. This is a great Venice web site:

  4. If you are interested in  a "different" type of museum, the Peggy Guggenheim will whet your whistle. It didn't do much for me, but I heard others oohhing and awing. I guess its in the eye of the beholder. For myself, I really enjoy going through the glass factories and their show rooms in Murano (a lot of factories will have motoscaffoi that will take you to Murano for a few euro or you can take the Linee Lagunari # 12. Don't miss going to Burano island as well for the lace work. (Same line)

  5. i'm italian, i live in milan but one year ago i went to venice!! it's a very beautiful city!! i love him!! some good places are:

san marco's square < piazza san marco

murano < it's a little island near venice and it's really nice!!

theathre "la fenice" < teatro la fenice

the bridge called "il ponte dei sospiri"

    good holidays!! bye

  6. Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, has the monuments to Titian and Antonio Canova.  It's a great church.

there are also the great Palladian structures of Il Renetore on Guidecca and in S. Giorgio Maggiore on the next island.  And the view from the campinale is better than that from S. Marco, and half the cost.

The best thing is that once you've rushed around doing the tourist.  It's so easy to kick back and just wander the back streets, you can't get lost and there are no dodgy neighbourhoods.
