  1. Please pardon me.  I'm plagerizing my own work...  I use the same answer, but there are similar questions being asked here...  I did add new information that I hadn't include in previous answers.

Cameras are less expensive than they were a year or two ago. Cameras selling now for 150.00 (even less!), use to cost twice as much or more, 2 years ago. So you have a lot to choose from with a variety of options and functions.

I personally like Canon cameras, and we own 2 Canon digicams, (PowerShot A610 and an A620), and a few of their 35mms. They are dependable, reputable and very user friendly! So are Sonys, Nikons, Olympus and Kodak. But I like the fact that Canon (and I believe Kodak), use sd/mmc (memory card). But if you want to buy extra memory to take pictures with, sd/mmc are much more affordable than other media memory formats. If you find/buy a camera that happens to take video, get extra memory cards. 2gb sd/mmc cards are getting to be cheaper also than they were a year ago.

Make a list of your wants, needs and things to consider what you'd like your camera to have:

1). Requires regular batteries or not? There are many cameras that all you do is recharge, (like a cellphone), the camera. I like cameras that use your basic AA batteries. You can buy rechargeable AA batteries, and buy regular ones in a pinch anywhere, should you find your camera without power, instead of being without a camera to use while it's hooked up being recharged. (What happens if you need to replace the internal built-in ion battery? Might be costly to replace and not easy to find). It's true that digicameras use up disposable batteries quickly. But you can buy rechargeable ones and they last a long time. It should be a must to buy rechargeable batteries (with it’s charger), There are some AA (stick with the name brands), that now recharges in an hour, or even less! (Remember to figure in the cost to buy rechargeable AA/AAA battery and battery recharger).

2). An optical viewfinder is very useful for those times when it's difficult to see your subject on your screen, and helps conserve power of your camera. This feature seems to be important to some, (me included), but to others, not necessary.  (This is where IS [Image Stabilization] comes in.  Helpful if your camera does not have an optical vierfinder.)

3). Don't get sucked in by the more MP (megapixels [10 and above]), the camera has, the better. It is not always the case. 5-6 mp is sufficient for most.

4). Optical zoom of at least 3-4x. Don't be fooled by a high digital zoom number. Opitical is what you're looking for.

5).  IS (image stabilization) and face detection?  I grew up taking pictures using 110 film and 35mm cameras.  They never had it, I grew to compensate adjusting ISO, film speed, manually focusing my subject, lighting, and a steady hand.  This is a personal choice for what an individual wants.

6).  Camera size:  Compact or subcompact?  You might  compromise functions and options when you go with a small and sleek camera.  This is also a personal choice.

So check out your local electronic/camera stores like Best Buy, Circuit City, Ritz or Wal-Mart, Target, K-Mart and even office supply stores like OfficeMax, Office Depot, Staples...you get the idea…any place with a camera department. Or online. You’ll find great deals in your price range.

Go for a Canon. If nikonguy also answers your question, he can recommend some specific Canon (despite his moniker) models that may fit your budget.

Hope this was helpful, but sorry if you found it to be too wordy. :-)

  2. This is one of the best cameras out there.. Canon Sd750. It's a little more than 150$.. 10$ more or around there. A lot of my friends own that camera and their pictures turn out fabulous. Plus, it has a huge LCD, cool effects, and is very compact. Amazon has a great deal but so does circuitcity + bestbuy. Shop around :) Oh.. and Costco is offering free memory with purchase.

  3. Check out the Canon Powershot A series cameras. Canon makes great cameras.
