  1. All of the above answers are pretty good in relation to cars, but in case you're asking about aircraft, there are a few good reasons. Having both pilot and mechanics ratings can give you a leg up in job selection. Even if you plan to be a pilot, it'll help you get some pretty cool jobs that might be harder to get otherwise. Compainies that fly in remote place or are understaffed love dual rated pilots. Aviation maintenance techs are in demand. I've met some who make more than a lot of pilots. It's a valuable skill. Plus, later on, you may want to build or work on your own plane like a lot of pilots.

  2. It comes in handy if your in a desert and your cars quites on you :)

  3. Being a good mechanic is a skill that you will always be able to use. Even if all you can do is change your oil, it beats paying jiffy lube twenty bucks to do it. Plus, if you get good at it, word spreads. I'm a professional jet engine mechanic, but make pretty good money on the side working on people's cars. For a hundred bucks and a case of beer I'll do something that a dealer would charge 500 dollars in labor for.

To me, it's being able to do it myself, and not have to rely on anyone else. Before I was a good mechanic, I had a truck. The fuel pump went out on it five times. I payed $650 to have it fixed the first time. The second time they said it was the relay box which was $150. The third time they said it was the fuel injectors, which cost $100 to clean. The fourth time, they said the pump was bad again, but it was free because of the warranty. The fifth time, I didn't go to the dealer. I asked a friend at work that was a mechanic, and he told me to check the wiring block under my door. There was a short in it that had caused every pump to go bad. The dealer couldn't care less if they stole my money over and over for unneeded repairs.

The point is, if you rely on yourself, they can't take your money from you.

  4. is really good to know if your car breaks down or you need a repair ,at least you can keep from getting ripped off if you know whats wrong with it,you cant always do your own repairs to them due to the fact that no one has all the tools necessary to do this with, but you can own enough tools to do most of the jobs with, and it helps save you money in the long run, good luck on it.
