  1. The best builder would be yourself.  You would know if things were done right or not.  Please do not go out and buy a large boat for your first sailboat.  If you know how to sail, then fine, but don't learn on a bigger boat.  The best way to learn is on a smaller boat.  Go to your local yacht club and ask if anybody needs crew.  Believe me, you will be able to "get a ride".  While crewing, you can see what boats are good and the ones that are not good.  Upkeep and maintenance are also an issue you need to think about.  A boat is like a car, a great car (from the factory) will not last if the upkeep is not done.  You can build a small boat or buy a smaller one and upgrade later.

  2. are you thinking of fast hardcore sailing or cruising. if you are looking for a rush a hobie is a great brand of catamaran

  3. Hinkleys are kinda the bentley of boats.   beneteau might be the caddillac.   catalina is the toyota.    hunter will get you from point a-b.   I liked my o'day which was more of an old vw.    I gave it a beating and it kept on going.   Took some college kids to really wreak it.
