  1. There is not a school or program, of which I am aware, that specializes in scenics or landscapes. Don't worry about that, though, as your preferred specialty will likely evolve into something new during your education.education and experience.

While a good school may help, the fact is that it's YOU who is the deciding factor in being a success or not. Basic skill sets can be taught, but creativity and vision is either in you, or it is not. Many of the best photographers, even today, do not have photographic degrees.

That all said, I would worry less about the program/school than I would about the faculty members I would be learning from. Find a program whose faculty will support and inspire you, and whose photographic style you find intriguing. One good teacher can have much more impact on a young photographer (or any artist) than a whole department who are aloof and egotistical.

Some ideas for good, all-around photo programs would be:

-Brooks Institute (not the same reputation it had in the 80's)

-Univ. of Minnesota: photojournalism, fine art

-Univ. of Ohio, photojournalism, fine art

-Univ. of Colorado at Boulder: good fine art dept!

    -Minnesota State University, Moorehead

-Univ. of Missouri at Columbia: photojournalism, commercial

Like I said, though, a photography degree, either BFA or BA, is not a requirement for a successful career. A degree certainly helps when it comes time to find a job, but it does not have to be photography. Only you can make you successful.

    Good luck.
