  1. A big one.

  2. I would get a double barrel .10 gauge.  Knock him on his keester and scare a little.

  3. There have been a few answers suggesting the .410.  The .410 is NOT a beginner's gun!  It requires a greater degree of accuracy than any other shotgun, and normally proves to be very frustrating for young shooters.

The best shotguns for a 10 year old are going to be 20 gauge guns designed to fit youth.  There are several different ones out there, but the best fitting shotgun for youth that I have seen is the Mossberg 500 super bantam.  It has a stock that can be adjusted to either 12 or 13 inches, and exchanged for an adult size stock later.

Focus on fit and shooting form and the kids won't have any trouble with a 20 gauge.  If you give them a gun that is designed for an adult, they will struggle to bring it to their shoulder and will be more likely to develop an aversion to recoil.

And make sure they get to hit things when they pull the trigger.  A sore shoulder seems to go away when they turn a clay into powder!

  4. got my first shotgun for christmas when I was 9. A browning 20 ga Citori lightning feather. didn't know what my grandpa was giving me at the time, but appreciate it now. Anyways, it's and extremely light over under, has a butt plate, not pad, and kicks more than most of my 12 gauges. I was fine to handle it, but it definitely bruised my shoulder enough to make me respect guns.

  5. Um, why not start the kid off with a BB gun or a .22 guage?

I think a shot gun is a little too aggressive.......

  6. If you can find a 410 snatch it up. But let him watch you shoot it for about 5 years OK.

  7. I started shooting about the same age, so all these posters that are snickering . . . . . well they obviously forgot what it was like to be young, and they probably never seen a 22LR Davey Crickett rifle, which is what i would advise to get a 10 year old started. Anyway you asked for a shotgun so here is a link for you to check out. I think a single shot hinged action is best for beginners to gain the respect required for firearms.

  8. well, a .410 would be a good choice because of the light recoil but, because of the small pattern, it would be tough one to hit your target with.  After a year or two with the .410 switch to a pump 20 or 12 gauge!!! Hope this helped!!!

P.S. first answerer - There is no such this as a 22 gauge.  It's a .22 caliber rifle.  And if the kid wants to shoot a shotgun, i say go for it!!!

  9. here's a good answer, if you could find a 410 gauge, go for it. you should be able to shoot a 12 or 20 gauge too. go down to a range that offers rentals and try some out
