I have split scapulas and my shoulders hurt when I swim with one arm for a while. Also, the pain goes up into my neck when I kick. I try stretching my neck, but the pain comes back after a while. Suggestions??

  1. I'd like to see stretches done <i>during</i> swim practice, how about doing shoulder stretches as you kick free? (the HTML there is there for emphasis, if Y!A read HTML it'd be italicized)

Honestly I'm not good with anatomy but from what Wikipedia says they're the bones around your shoulder joint but for stretches I would advise pretzel stretches where you take one arm, grab your opposite shoulder with that arm and then with the side that has its shoulder being grabbed apply pressure to the elbow trying to force the arm farther across your body. I would also recommend what we call "twisters" where you place one arm against the wall with the palm on the wall and you twist so that it looks like you're trying to force your arm through the wall. These stretches typically don't do much for me but for you these might help with that pain.

  2. If you are experiencing pain going up your neck while you swim, YOU NEED TO SEE A DOCTOR. If you've already seen a doctor, you need to see a physical therapist who specializes in sports medicine. They will be able to give you exercises and/or stretches that will help you. Although it's fast and free, don't take casual advice from strangers on the internet regarding your health! Advice here on Y!A, although well intended, could make your situation worse.
