What are some good things to do with kids while babysitting?

Ok, so this summer I'm a nanny for this family in my neighborhood. It's only from 8:15 to 12:30, which isn;t much time, but I need to make a good impression tomorrow...which is my first day. The kids are 7 and 5. There's a boy (older) and a girl (younger). I know that it will be nice outside, but I really need to make a good impression, like maybe have them do a craft or something fun like that. If you have any ideas to help me make a good impression on the family, that would be great.

Is there a park or pool nearby? I am sure that would be fun and you can do crafts. Also, play games together and ask them what they would like to do.

for the little girl:

beading

coloring sheets

flower impressions

make a card for mommy

paint her nails (ask her mom for permission first)

decorate sandals



for the boy:

make a card for daddy

coloring sheets

play soccer or some kind of sport in the front lawn

read a book

The first day should be spent just getting to know each other and finding out what they like, then go from there. Don't assume they like crafts,ask them what they would like to do. Give them paper and pencil and ask them to answer your questions. Make it fun for them. Have different color pens,markers etc. Ask them to write their favorite color in their favorite color. What is your favorite vegetable and what is your least favorite. Favorite game.Best friends name. Favorite TV show,song,cartoon. This will be fun for them and will give you an idea for other activities. Think of all sorts of questions, They will need help writing esp. the 5 year old. Help out as needed. This will probably take most of your first day and should be fun. I use to do daycare, and believe me the parents will think it is great that you want to know what interests their kids rather then turning on the TV and talking on your phone.

but make sure you don't watch too much TV with them, parents just don't seem to like that.................

The best impression you can make is by doing something fun with the kids.  The kids telling their parents how awesome you are and how they can't wait for you to come back tomorrow is the BEST impression you can make!!!  Believe me they will beg to have you back if their kids love you!

You should let them tell you what they want to do.  Let them show you what they like to do on the 1st day.  Keep them busy because 4 hours and 15 minutes will probably fly for you.  Keep them outside and active (but if it's too hot then watching movies that they enjoy or coloring is always great too)!

I used to babysit when I was younger, and the thing I found to keep the parents most happy was to get down with the kids and play with them. I used to build forts, both inside and outside. We would watch movies when it was too hot to be outside, I would let them be involved when I fixed them meals so they would learn to cook, we would put our bathing suits on and play with water guns and sprinklers, or just get out paper and crayons and color.

Don't think about pleasing the parents too much, if you have fun with the kids then you will get rave reviews from mom and dad.
