My husband and I aren't really wanting to send our son to pre-school. Instid I'm wanting to teach him all of his basic smarts here at home. I'm a stay at home mom so I'd love nothing more than to teach my own kid. However I am sending him to public school when he turns 5. I was just wanting some advice/tips on how to teach my kid his ABC, colors, numbers, etc. I want to also teach him to talk better. I want to make it easy, fun, and stress free for him so he actualy likes learning. He has different books that teach those things really well and I work with him all the time, but he just doesn't seem to be getting it. At his age I would think you could get them started on those simple basics, right? What good advice could anyone give me---Please!?

  1. since you are already a computer savvy woman, you might try checking the internet for preschool curriculum (reggio emilia, montessori, creative curriculum). there are songs (or CDs you can buy), fingerplays, craft activities, book suggestions, and others to promote all the domains of children's development. i also recommend taking him to parks so he gets social development or if you have friends with children so he gets socialized. also check out kindergarten curriculum so you can "teach to the test". i hope this helps.

  2. These are a few tips I pick up working with at my mom's daycare kids.

A good way to teach a child there colors is to tell them the colors of the clothes that you are putting on them and have them repeat it back to you.  Later on in the day ask them what color there clothes are and see if they remember.  Also tell them about the colors of the things they come in contact with everyday so they can make a connection.

For the colors there is this really good toys out there which have button in the shape of the alphabet on them.  These are really good learning tools because they allow the child to see and hear the alphabet as they are learning.  Also teach them the ABC song but try to go slow especially at the LMNOP part.

As for the numbers I think it is best start slow.  Teach them to count by hand by hold up one finger and say one and have them copy you.

Also try to incorporate learning in his everyday activities instead of putting aside a few a hours of a day for learning.  Remember to go slow and don't rush anything.  Ever child learns at a different pace just give them time.  Also don't forget about t.v.  There are alot of good shows on television that are very education like for PBS kids Nick Jr. and Noggin.  If you can try to watch the programs with your child to see what they respond to best.

    Hope this helps.

  3. Good for you!

      Have fun and Good luck!

  4. I have twin girls that are 2. I taught them their alphabet by making a caterpillar out of construction paper and hanging it on their wall. I made coloring books with numbers on them for them to color that way they learn numbers and colors at the same time. We play "I Spy" in the so that they talk to me while I am driving. They have a very large vocabulary. Hope this helps..

  5. Flash cards, wooden puzzles with only the alphabet letters, cardboard picture books with one word on each page (cat, dog, house, car, etc.). You can get these things at KB Toys, or Toys R Us. Crayons and construction paper are good for drawing pictures. At 3 he should know his ABC's and be able to count to ten.

  6. i would do something that would be fun for him so he could remember it this is called"number cupcakes" what u do is bake cupcakes for your child and let him frost it with u and add sprinkles. then u can buy icing tubes and let him ice on the age he is, what adress he lives at or possibly his telephone numbers. u can also do the same with letters, shapes, colors and the alphabet, this teqnique has worked many times and it improves their handwriting and mental remebering skills =] enjoy and have fun with your kid!

  7. I think it's great to devote that time at home to education.

For letters and numbers, we have dedicated a half hour each day to one letter, beginning with A, with a new letter every week. We color pictures of it, play games to identify words that begin with it, and pick the letter out of random assortments.

We also used Printshop to make coloring pages with our daughter's name. She can color her name, and we sit with her sometimes and direct her to color a specific letter with a specific color. She has her colors and the letters of her name DOWN.

We do lots of things with numbers and such, too, but this is something that we have really found effective. Good luck to you-you're a good mom.

  8. Honestly, you are doing the right thing by looking at books that teach the basic colors and letters and numbers.  Don't try to teach him 8 colors in one day.  You could even take it one color, one number, one letter per day/week.  Hang a Letter on the  refrigerator and look at it several times a day.  Each time that you are in the kitchen, call out the letter. You could even name a couple of words that start with the letter. Say "A" apple, "A" acrobat  "B" balloon, "B" ball, etc.

After you have been over all of the letters, colors, numbers, you could show him flashcards and the letters, colors, numbers that he knows, take them out and only go over the ones that he does not know.

Good luck and do not pressure him and do not stress yourself if he only remembers half after 6 months.  Remember that he has 2 years to know them and the kindergarten teachers will go over all of this along with shapes throughout the entire year.

  9. any items produced by the leapfrog company are EXCELLENT for teaching.  You can find them for inexpensive prices on ebay . I am a recently retired elem teacher and they are the only product on the market I will stand behind because they follow the correct teaching process and methods.  You will learn a lot from them too on how to present the alphabet and all.
