What are some good topics to do a persuasive speech?

Many of the big "hot topics," such as abortion and same-s*x marriage, are easy to find material on. The problem is that professors see a trillion of these a day, so you're competing with the other trillion who did the same paper as you. Also, you run the risk of having your professor grade you poorly based on their own personal biases on the topic. I always suggest doing something original; not only will it make your stand out, it shows that you are an original thinker, and your instructor will be much happier not to be reading the same regurgitated topic; a happy professor gives out more A's.

A persuasive essay can be on anything, not just something controversial. I once got an A arguing for chunky peanut butter over creamy (although that was in high school LOL.) Start with smaller ideas, and brainstorm. Last semester, I wrote one on why I felt that Certified Nurse-Midwives were a better option in many cases than Obstetricians when having a baby.

Take something you know about, something you like, something you wish other people knew more about. It doesn't need to be an issue that has only two options, such as Pro Life vs. Pro Choice; in fact, it will be a richer paper if you argue for one of many options. I'm just tossing a few out, topics I remember being suggested in class; feel free to use them, or just let them get you started.

Soda machines should be banned from high schools...

Legalize prostitution...

Football should be the national pasttime...
