  1. Take a chord progression, say something from the Real book, like Moon River.  Look at what you have there tonality-wise.  Locate the II-V-I progressions and you'll know you can play within the I key.  Look for interesting chords outside the main key or tonality.  What are they?  Try to improvise over them using arpeggios and then expand into scales that work.  Think about what notes lead into and out of the various chords so you can put something coherent together.  And listen to accomplished players to see how they improvise on the song.

  2. Learn your scales

    Pentatonic

    Minor

    Major

    Diminished

    Harmonic

    etc.

Then try learnin some solos from various songs eventually youll be able to piece licks toghether

  3. Try a series of jazzy chords like the Major and Minor 9th etc. and insert jazz lead melodies around the chord progressions.
