What are some good ways to keep my room organized?

It seems like my room is always messy. It seems like even after I clean it, a few days later it still looks like a tornado just hit it. What are some ways to keep it nice and clean, and get rid of all the clutter in there?

  1. The first big help is to weed out. Go through your stuff and decide

    Get 3 boxes

    1. have I used this in 6 months? If the answer is no put it in the first box. Take it to the goodwill

    2. Do I want to keep this but not display this? Put it in box 2 but hopefully your parents will let you store this somewhere.

    3. Is this trash. Put it in this box.

Remember less is best and problem is you apparently have too much stuff. Less is so much easier to keep organized. Find a place for everything and if you have no place for something say to yourself. Do I need this? Probably not.

Then once you get your room just right then every night before you get in bed pick up. Do not let yourself go to sleep with out picking up everything you didn't put away that day. Lay out your clothes.  When you awake you will feel so much more energized cause your room looks nice. Trust me this works.

  2. Go to Ikea, Target, Walmart, buy some inexpensive cardboard organizer cubbies.  You can put all kinds of things in them and stack em too.  Also for shoes they have plastic shoe holders that drape from a hanger that hold lots of shoes and get them out of the way; keeps them from gathering dust too.  And throw out anything you haven't used in the last year.  I know, I'm a pack rat, lol.  Have at it!  Mary

  3. My son has that same issue. He seems to not even notice the mess until it is overwhelming.  We've been setting up his room this month, finding a home for everything.  He has a five-shelf bookcase that we've organized to hold all his school supplies.  I've labeled the shelves with what goes on them.  His different types of paper (like computer, notebook and graph paper) are on those plastic shelves that can stack one on another. His small things, like paper clips and push pins, are in plastic soap dishes - they are shallow enough to get at the items easily and yet will hold quite a bit of stuff.  Cups are used as pencil holders - but he has colored pencils, ink pens, markers, and highlighters in separate cups as well.

His clothes used to be on a bookcase in his room, since he could never seem to find clothes in his dresser drawers, but he's at the point now that he can remember to check the dresser drawers before asking where his socks are.  I even labeled the drawers with what is in each.

He has two bedside tables and each has a shelf at the base.  One is for sheets and the other for towels.  Labeled, of course.

Anything that he doesn't need every day is in his closet; things that belong together are put in clear containers so that he can find everything.  He even had a set of shelves in his closet at one point, but we've moved it to the hallway just outside his bedroom door (we have a really weird hallway that gets wider about three feet before my son's bedroom door, so it can't be seen from down the hall).  All of his "for fun" books are on those shelves now.

I have a box and a clothes basket in his room as well.  The box is for clothes that have become too small (he's growing like a weed!) and anything else he will no longer use and the basket is for dirty clothes. Even though he misses the basket all the time, it's still there, ready for him to gather up his stuff on laundry day.

We also went through his stuff together and got rid of things that were just collecting dust.  If it isn't going to be used over the next year, it goes in the "give away" box.  If it is something he only uses rarely, it's in his closet.

And, finally, he has two wastebaskets in his room.  One is within easy reach of his desk, where he does most of his homework, and the other is next to his bed, to give him a close-by place to toss used Kleenexes and food wrappers (food isn't supposed to be in there, but you have to be realistic!)

Mostly, it's about finding a home for everything and then making sure you check your room each day or two to see if everything is where it belongs.  It takes time to get into a new routine and some people just can't function if they don't have everything out in the open (my husband is one of those types). So, do the best you can, but don't beat yourself up over any "failure" to keep stuff perfect. There's "clean" and then there's "clean enough".  Do your best, and no one can ask anything more.

I found a place online with helpful tips when it comes to organizing. I've linked you to the home page, so you will have to scroll down to click on specific areas in which you want help.  Good luck!
