She gets frisky sometimes and doesn't really listen. She isn't broken yet, but I still want to be able to work with her. What are some things I can do to help her understand that I am the boss?

  1. the horse is still young, so its not going to know as much as an older horse. when it gets to be about 4 years of age, you should start training it. everytime my horse doesn't respect me, i yank on his halter, which helps a lot.

  2. what i would do is a lot of lounging teach her to come up to you in the ring and work when asked be firm wit her and dont let her push you around when you have finished wit her give her rewards by brushing her and letting her have a pick of grass or fead her if you do this all the time she will learn that if she is good and does wat you ask of her she will be rewarded  and she will also learn to respect you and she will willingly trust you and want to do wat you ask of her it all comes down to time and patients hope this helps leah

  3. When you walk to her stall our pasture bring her half a apple or a sugar cube. If she is frisky the sugar might not be the best of ideas.

Don't manhandled her, just be firm yet calm. If she starts to freak out or rear/buck, then speak softly to her to reassure her.

Don't tell her "good girl" though when she has done something bad. Say it to her after she has been relaxed for a few minutes.

  4. you have to remember she is still a baby. but if she gets out of hand just lightly slap her on the shoulder. she will pick it up soon enough. just give her lots of love and care and u should do fine.

  5. Ok, Firstly, she is probably too young to be lunged extensively. Manners with handling in general need to be obtained before you start with lunging, etc.

Firstly, do not feed her until she had ley you catch her and until you have done whatever you need to do with her.

Have you taught her to lead? Don't yank on the halter when doing this as this develops a bad habbit and will make your horse less sensitive to commands in the long run. If she is resisting walking on then pop a lead line around the top of her bottom and give it a gental tug when asking her to walk on, when she walks on, release the pressure and say "good girl" in a kind voice. If she does not do as she is told, then use a firm stirn voice saying "aatt" or "no", but do not yell. Horses don't understand words, they understand tone of voice.

Lastly, always end your lessons on a positive note when she is doing what you are asking of. Reward with pats, praise and lastly, her feed.

  6. I highly highly highly recomend get a parelli trainer.

there whole thing is about ill give you respect if you give me respect and teaching a horse how his mother would teach him.

    seach on goolge pat parelli

  7. This is what I do to all the horses I get to train. Its called lunging for respect. You are teaching the horse to respect your space, look to you for guidance, and a lot more. You want your horse to listen to you just as well as they do the dominant horse in the pasture. That way when they get spooked, or when it comes to saddling, they know you are not going to hurt them, and will become submissive to whatever you want them to do.

If you would like me to work out some kind of training schedule for my methods, for more details or info, and if you have any questions email me at TurnNburnem@aol.com

    Good Luck!

  8. ground work is amazing for younins,

try walking with a lead rope and when she pushes past, or doesnt stop when you stop, back her up and if she wont back up, use more force (crop or a smack with your hand)

  9. If she's still a baby, then you just need to give her a little slap on the rump when she does something wrong. Not hard, though. Then, maybe after a while she'll learn what she's doing wrong and she'll stop. good luck! :)
