  1. Dan Brown's "The DaVinci Code" and "Angels And Demons" are both good.

"The Constant Gardener" by former British diplomat/spy John LeCarre is an eye opener.  A diplomats wife dies in Africa while traveling to provide medical aid to some of the locals.  The diplomat then digs into the case to find who would assainate a medical team.  Suffice to say, the answer is not something as simple as tribal warfare.

There are two books by the same author and I am drawing a blank on his name.  The first books is "Vertical Run"-a man is exposed to a deadly virus and is trapped in an office building while being hunted down by a team of assassins.  The second book is "The Legacy"-a young man is bequethed a key to a safe deposit box.  Inside, he discovers a home movie of JFK's assassination (filmed at a different angel than the famous footage shot by Zepruder).  Now he has to dodge the government and the assassins who both fear what the film will reveal.
