One of the best I've read is Suffer the Children by John Saul. Anything by John Saul - his stuff is almost scarier than Stephen King, because King's books are more psychologically scary or thrilling. Depends on what you're looking for!

I still have nightmares about some of John Saul's books, even 18 years after I read them. I also read all of King's books up until 1995 (I live not too far from him and have met him a few times) but his stuff doesn't scare me as much.
