  1. Austin, Texas - large cycling community plus a cycling aware community.

Portland, Oregon - The most cycling friendly community which has won awards for their progressive work.

  2. Washington DC has a tremendous trail system running throughout the city and suburbs, something like 300 miles of trails and bike lanes. Plus you can head out into the country in any direction on many good longer-route rides. The mountains are a century to the west and the beach is a century to the east.

The DC bike community is extremely focused and vocal and provides a lot of support for commuters and recreational riders. There are daily, semi-official, ad-hoc 3.2 mile training rides around a semi-closed loop at Hains Point (the mayor rides them--and he's good too!). Rock Creek Drive thru the middle of the city is regularly closed for cyclists on summer weekends. A drive to work day every May is a huge event. In addition there are lots of first rate races in the area all season long, from pro stuff like the CSC Invitational to amateur races every weekend.

Except for the traffic (highway, not bike) and the summer humidity, DC is a cyclist's paradise. And it's the east coast: it's flat!

  3. Nantucket, an island in MA, has nice rolling hills, lovely beaches, is great for dogs, retirees, and tourists, and has a long bike path. Also it isnt all that busy on the roads.

  4. Abilene Texas is nice, great rides through the hills and largest wind farm in the world.
