I am extremely interested in the weather but I do not want to be stuck behind a computer or in front of a camera for my career. Is there like a job that gets me out in the thick of the weather? Like the question says a hands-on job.

  1. A couple of other answers suggested storm chaser.  This is really not a good answer, since there are VERY few people that paid to chase storms, and even those that do spend much of their time doing other things.  However, there are people that send up weather balloons twice a day, they get to be outside at least then and do something.  You might become a meteorological technician that services weather instruments.  For example, there are thousands upon thousands of automated weather stations online now, and new ones every day, so you could learn how to install and service those.  You could become a fire weather meteorologist, and give on the spot forecasts for firefighters.  There are also jobs forecasting for sporting events, such as golf and sailing.  Finally, if you get a Ph.D. you can design and participate in field studies (maybe even storm chasing), that can be pretty exciting.  Some of my colleagues do things like analyze snow for soot, analyze rainwater in the Sierra Nevada, and study pollution in the Indian Ocean.

  2. Well, if you want to be very active, then why not do storm spotting or storm chasing? If you're really good with equipment, gain the necessary knowledge and experience, and know what's right from wrong, then give storm chasing a try. You could also do storm spotting, which is where you travel around and collect data for the NWS or something else.

  3. Storm Chaser.

  4. Shoveling snow
