I have a 11yr old thoroughbred. He has been on stall rest for a while because of a torn muscle from jumping. I was wondering what are some ways to grow a good butt... lol. I do alot of trotting and transitions, poles. I was wondering what else I could do that I am not thinking of. Thanks for the help!

  1. certainly uphill and downhill work. do a little more each time you exercise him. you should try building the muscles up slowly. if you go too fast, you will hurt him. the most fun way to do up and down hill work is on trails. take some friends and go on trail rides together! it will be really fun.

  2. Yes - uphills and downhills.  I was kinda laughing at this question - grow a good butt?  Feed him lots of potatoes and bread, that's where I got my big butt from...ha ha ha.

Whatever you do that exercises the hind end.  Lunging with rollbacks or turns back on the hind quarters - just as with us, we must work the muscles we hope to build.

  3. Uphill work! Don't overdo it though, the muscle will still be weak

  4. lounging

    sidepassing

    backing

    haunch turns

    forehand turns

  5. Walking is good, trotting and cantering in soft dirt builds muscles everywhere but I would be very careful of the injury and not over do.  Backing up builds muscles in the butt and fairly quickly but again don't over do it as you will have him back on stall rest.  I would probably check with my vet as to what would be 'ok' to do.

    Good luck.

  6. yea, just uphill and downhill, but if its really weak, just walk it around every day
